ABCP Year-End Spectacular!

Let's all start the New Year off right - by taking care of the stuff we were supposed to have done last week! Namely, our year-end show. We trot out dozens and dozens of nominee-nominees, some of which become actual nominees, and of those, some of them will win! "When, When, When," you ask? "Why, right now!" we reply, also in Italian. Also also, we are briefly joined by a special guest, which is this:

At least one of you has already noticed that we've added a donate button to the blog over there on the right-hand side (-->) after enough of you told us that you would actually welcome the opportunity.

So here's how the game is played - The following were nominee-nominees ... that is, they were nominated to be nominated. To find out who actually gets those nominations, and most importantly (or least importantly if your picks did not win) who wins.

Awesome show, and an awesome year! I'd also like to mention that the Sonic the Hedgehog comic was actually the very first comic that I ever read, way back in first grade ('95); and aside from the Essential Spider-Man trades (because of course I had to start at the beginning), the only comic I read as a kid. I haven't read it since 7th grade, but back then it was off both the hook and the chain!

Anyway, as encouraged, my picks:

Hero of the Year
"Star Lord" Peter Quill

Villain of the Year
Loki (If for nothing else than for the concept of the Trickster God of Mischief to explain an essential plot element of the biggest event of the year in a one-shot tie-in that nobody bought. DASTARDLY meta!)

Writer of the Year
Jonathan Hickman

Artist of the Year
Dave Stewart

Crap of the Year
Marvel's Rampant Cancellations

Comic Related...Item of the Year
"The War For Infinity" by Adam WarRock

Best New Searies
S.H.I.E.L.D. (One of the only books that makes me want to re-read it to understand the story.)

Story of the Year
Daytripper (No one has a reason to not get the trade when it comes out. Not even newborns and the elderly.)

Haven't listened to it yet, but thanks, just in time for my flight back to England.

Evie if you're going to take issue with Aaron using the word unique as a descriptor you should probably be called to task on pronouncing Chris Samnee and Sam-nee instead of Sahm-knee as it is properly pronounced.

Evie said...

OH SNAP. Well, I do apologize to Chris, I have only read his name and didn't know how it was pronounced, but I do hate mispronouncing names as it always happens to me.

But I mean, that's a name that I wouldn't have much reason to hear aloud--grammar is grammar.

Aaron said...

That's true, there's no reason you'd have heard it pronounced correctly, unless you had ever listened to me do it, which I have EVERY TIME we've talked about "Thor:TMA" or "The Mighty" over the last two years or so.

Not that I'm still upset about the on-air "unique" burn or anything...

Please please please please please tell me the name of that Tom jones song Aaron was "dueting" on the show! I am going nuts! i have been on frantic google search and am pretty sure i am spelling quando wrong.

aaron said...

You're spelling it right, but it's Engelbert Humperdinck, not Tom Jones.

Donating another $5.00 just for the Engelbert Humperdink infomration! Man I got to get my 1970's era crooners straight.

I definitely think Tom Jones needs to do it though.

I never heard quando, quando, quando before they i find on i-tunes Fergie and Nelly Furtatdo have done a version of it? Really?

Of all the spaghetti and pasta themed almost-rap songs, that one has got to be in the top ten.

Trouble is there's no authority on supposed "Standard English" to judge correct or incorrect grammar by, like the French Academy or whatever, and, since the language has been evolving and changing forever, arguments about traditional usage come down to where you're getting your tradition from.

In my Oxford dictionary the second definition of "unique" is "unusual, remarkable" -- but it's marked as /disputed/ and then says "the use of 'unique' in sense 2 is regarded as incorrect by some people." Maybe it's just me, but when the dictionary starts referring to you as "some people" it may be time to chill :P

Great episode, Happy New Year!

Evie said...

You can bet your ass that someone had to PULL TEETH from the Oxford English Dictionary to get them to include that disputed definition. I guarantee that by "some people" they actually mean most of their staff.

aaron said...

From New York, I'm "Some People..."

Per Chris Samnee's website: "Samnee rhymes with 'omni.'" I met Chris and his wife Laura last year -- she gave me the trade of Chris's Queen and Country arc because they were moving and she wanted them out of the house. Great folks, the Samnees.

Villain of the Year
SECRET SIX, Ghost, Lex Luthor, Mikaboshi, Maxwell Lord.

Crap of the Year
CANCELLATIONS OF THOR TMA, ATLAS, MADAME XANADU, etc.; Sentry: Fallen Sun; Rise of Arsenal.

Evie said...

THANK YOU for reminding me about the Queen and Country novel!!! I LOOVEEE those. I just hadn't bought it because I was waiting for paperback, but now I have Kindle on my phone so eff that. Downloading now.

Ethan Hoddes said...

Evie, I wouldn't worry too much about lingering bitterness over the on-air correction. It's the second time its happened with the same word, and clearly he's completely forgotten about it.

Aaron, if you really can't use unusual (and really 'you have unique taste in clothing' is also pretty backhanded). Than extraordinary and uncommon also work.

Martin Gray said...

Happy New Year, Aaron and Evie. I'm still catching up on episodes.

Hiya, did you get a comment from me on Ep 118 about four days ago re: Black Swan. Maybe it never went through ... or is there a cut-off date for comments?

Martin Gray said...

Oh flip, I suddenly thought - what if I'm so stupid as to have posted to the wrong show comments? And I had. And you'd answered. Cheers Evie, I'll give Black Swan a shot.
