ABC Podcast, episode #96 plus visual aids

This episode of Awesomed By Comics is brought to you by HITS, which is really the same as HTTC, but shhhhhhhh. Big wins for DC's imprints, as Sweet Tooth, Sparta USA and Demo showcase some impressive storytelling. The Bulletproof Coffin sets up an interesting premise, The Red Hood is much better than we thought it would be, and Heralds is exactly as good as we thought it would be, which is very very very good. Also, yon peeps shall have thy bottoms rocked mayhaps? Because TERRY MCGINNIS.

Sorry guys, but I'm pretty sure that New Kids on the Bloc didn't sing that song.

Evie said...

We weren't claiming to be singing any New Kids songs, just one about them (which is, I have remembered, by LFO, aka Lyte Funky Ones)...

Both Confessions of A Super Hero and Finishing the Game are now on my instant queue!

P.S. I loved the "Rockin Bottoms" jokes.

I'm a new listener starting a couple weeks back after Evie was on ifanboy. Wanted to say i really enjoy the podcast - thanks for all the entertainment. The 2 of you are great together and i like the format of your show. That said if i could just offer 1 suggestion - get to it - it takes 10-15 minutes to get the show started. I, and many others, listen to hear you talk about comics - hats??? Anyway, thanks for all the work you put into this.

Evie said...

Thanks Chris, and welcome! And to respond to your request, well, I just last night got a message from someone saying that the reason they listen to our podcast is for stuff like the hats. So I guess we'll have to alternate :).

I love the hat stuff, and whether I'm interested in the rest of the banter at the start depends on the subject. But hey, you're taking the time and trouble to give us free podcasts, and we can always fast forward.

Just keep on giving us the comics chat and I'll be happy!

I really enjoyed Heralds too and was delighted to guess Frankie Raye quite early on. I'm always on the alert when a Mysterious Woman appears. One day I'll be lucky and it'll be the return of Agatha Harkness outside of a cupboard.

Confessions of A Super Hero is also on hulu.com if someone doesn't have a netflix account.

I also like the hat talk, as well as thesaurus lists and feline guests. Now my cats keep demanding we go to taco bell. I have to remind them i don't have a car and they can't balance on my handlebars.

Ha, the rambling at the beginning was what really hooked me, as a new listener. Luckily the magic of iPod lets you skip it if you're not a fan.

I'm liking Phil Noto's Avengers covers too. You should definitely check out the two artbooks he's put out if you can find them, some gorgeous stuff in there.

I can't believe that Unknown Soldier is getting cancelled! Well, actually, its cancellation was pretty inevitable, but damn!

I started reading the trades recently (yep, both of 'em) after hearing Aaron talk about what a great book it is. And now it's getting the axe. Thanks a lot, Aaron. Gettin' us hooked on an amazing, thoroughly different book when you must have known, deep down, that it wouldn't make it.

Still, the one-time disappointment of a great book getting cancelled is much better than the weekly disappointment of reading bland, mediocre books that hang around forever. I guess.

Oh, and keep up with the hats. I can't wait to hear about the Fez.

Evie: I was so sure your favorite panel from Heralds was going to be Patsy punching you-know-who in the face (which made me laugh out loud).

Also, glad both of you dug Red Hood.

Seriously? Seriously. In a week with a cover involving Power Pack chasing Thor, Toddler of Thunder, while carrying what can only be described as ADORABLE PLUSHIE BETA RAY BILL and ONE-EYED BABY ODIN, you pick the cover with Hank Pym looking at Janet van Dyne.

I'm not angry... I'm just disappointed.

Man, the hunderdth show had better be about sombreros.

More Hat talk and less of the comic chat filler!

Another Bad Creation was the creation of Michael Bivins of New Edition/Bell Biv Devoe, not Maurice Starr.

As pseudonyms go, Shaky Kane seems closer to Frank Quitely or Jack Kirby than "Jock". Emma really doesn't have any on-panel history with any non-X characters, I think there have been continuity plants about a past with Tony Stark, as well as Namor (predictably, both involved her sleeping with them). Not that I'm complaining (at least about the idea of building past encounters in, not neccessarily the execution) Wolverine was also a latecomer as a popular character, and he similarly has had past relationships with all and sundry shoehorned into his history, it's an obvious thing to do with a newly prominent character in an old shared universe to give them some staying power. That being said, none of the women mentioned strike me as the type Emma would hang out with, although I guess that's sort of the point.

Ever since their odd guest star appearance on Sabrina The Teenage Witch, I've always kinda wanted to see the Violent Femmes in wacky, Archies/Josie & the Pussycats/Monkees styled comic book adventures. Like, maybe Victor de Lorenzo and Guy Hoffman are always jealous of each other and bicker about who's the real drummer, or Brian Ritchie's uncle dies and leaves him a bazillion dollars but he can only claim it if they all spend the night IN A HAUNTED HOUSE!

And lots of "Gordon Gano is short" jokes. Because seriously, the man is pocket-sized.

Good hat this week. In Israel, is it known as Moishe Uffnyk?

Another great episode. I did not know about Heralds #1, so I'm going to go pick it up.

Am I the only one whose comic shop hasn't seemed to have been ordering the Power Pack/Thor mini series? My shop got issue #1 and i enjoyed it greatly, but never got in issue 2 or 3 unless they happened to have sold out Wed. morning.

Aaron said...

Eric: No, you are not. I haven't seen an issue since the first one, although we also haven't been to the big store (midtown) in several weeks, and there are lots of things the holes-in-the-wall that we go to just can't afford to carry. After we missed two and three, we decided to get the inevitable digest when it comes out.

- Great Doctor Who impersonation.
- Heralds totally does rule.
- Play BALLS.
- Too rough on Hawk and Mock maybe? Or am I just to big a West Coast Avengers fan(I'm still pissed at Bendis's take on WonderMan over in Avengers).
- good show guys.

I'm a huge fake Black Canary and fake Green Arrow fan, so I was a little underwhelmed by Hawkeye/Mockinbird #1. I'm hoping once they get past the Phantom rider stuff it'll get better.

Also, I liked Heralds, but I have to agree with Ethan. I just don't buy the relationship between Emma and these other ladies at all.

Newish listener, first-time poster. I fell behind on my podcast queue during vacation and am now catching up. Briefly, since I'm two weeks late:

*My son and daughter LOVE Pokemon, so I've seen most of the last year's episodes. Would I watch it if my kids didn't love it? No. But it is goofy fun sometimes. And yes, the new theme song blows; bring back the Galactic Battles music, please.
*Put me in the "enjoys the banter" column.
*I read and actively disliked McCann's Hawk & Mock "The Reunion" mini, so I'll be skipping the ongoing. Sounds like both real GA and fake GA are now crappy. :(
*Thanks for the trade alert sounder; I'll be getting Sweet Tooth, Demo, and others in trade, and I appreciate the warning.

And that's enough for now. Maybe I can get down to one week behind in a few days...
-Jim B.

You and me, Aaron. The Web was a great series.

Great concept, interesting character, and easily folded into the DCU proper (with Oracle's appearance).

I wonder if Grant Morrison will at least name check the Web in Batman, Inc., since Bats is essentially biting the Web's idea of a franchise superhero.
