ABC Podcast Episode #93 plus visual aids

This episode of Awesomed By Comics is brought to you by the pop art commercialization of an ancient fable. In a week with WAY, WAY, WAY more comics than anyone should have to read in a week, Siege finishes up without incident, the Heroic Age kicks off with the most worthy of champions, Booster Gold is funny again, the Unwritten is predictably stellar, pets have accidents, and the Sentry's farewell is somethin else alright. We extend a thank you and welcome to new listeners and then proceed half-cocked, and the thesaurus plays an integral role.

I just want to say that I'm a listener who started listening after Evie's appearance on iFanboy and I enjoy the show. I just wanted to let you know that you gained at least one new listener from that guest appearance.

I have to agree that Stark's awful neverending speech read like the writer was actually going for meaningful/moving, not intentionally playing up Stark's self-involvement. And then the Thing's speech was just insane. I honestly can't think of a worse comic I've read in the last couple of years.

I'm with Aaron on the Void just being regular old Void though. So what was the point of that Dark Avengers issue suggesting the Void was the wrath of God or something from the Old Testament days?

The storyline being referenced in Booster Gold was called Great Darkness Saga, and it was co-written by Keith Giffen. It's coming back into print after at least 15 years, and is definitely one of the best stories of the Legion of Super Heroes, even if the whole mystery angle is lost because of the title.

I'm with Evie. The Sentry schmaltz felt like I was having hot needles poked in my eyes.

Hiya, new listener here. Just wanted to say the podcast is great! I also love the blog so I can see the covers and panels you talk about.

I actually have a job (part time) and money (not really) so I have started my first pull list! There are 25 books on my list right now but hopefully I will be able to add more soon. It is great to have a show like this so I can get recommendations for books and hear about stories that I can't read. You have already pushed me over the edge on Secret Six and it is on the list.

Keep up the great work!

Another new listener who's sticking around - it's the oldies who are quiet!

Colour me underwhelmed over The Return of Bruce Wayne. Or rather, clrmundrwlmdbthrtnfBrcWn, grunt. Can't DC ever do a caveman story without Vandal Savage showing up?

I loved Booster too (reviewed on my blog, Too Dangerous for a Girl), comic of the week, no problem.

The BBC website has an article on the history of devil horns/thwip hands. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8687002.stm No reference to spider-man/ Dr Strange and it lists showing support for the "Texan Longhorns" and warding off the "Evil Eye" as possible origins that pre-date (and possibly inspired?) Steve Ditko's 60's creations as they are mentioned in the 50's and late 19th century respectively.

PS great show one of the best comics podcasts on the internet (or anywhere else)

By ze way (am so Eurpoean), neither Ryan Choi nor Dr Light II are Asian American - they're Asians in America. Ryan's Hong Kong-born, while Kimi is Japanese.

First heard of your podcast on iFanboy and now I'm addicted. Thoughts this week:

1) Deciphering the "Don't Be Cruel" lyric has become my new purpose in life.

2) Sentry: Rising Sun is one of the worst comics I've read in YEARS.

I didn't read the Sentry book, but I had a thought about the Rogue thing. One of the (many) big metatextual things in the original Sentry story was the idea that the Sentry couldn't exist because with him the Marvel Universe wouldn't be the Marvel Universe. His relationship with several characters is basically that he solves their big humanizing flaw. So the Hulk was under control, Peter Parker won a Pulitzer and wasn't a loser any more, Tony Stark dealt with his alcoholism early on. In that context the Rogue thing makes perfect sense, and also doesn't undermine the character, since her memory of the Sentry would have been erased. Of course this just underlines why bringing the Sentry back probably wasn't a good idea.
