ABC Podcast Episode #94 plus visual aids

This episode of Awesomed By Comics is brought to you by a second consecutive week of Dio tributes, except this week's involve fancy salad and ridiculous shoes. Aaron discovers how all the Grant Morrison Batman fans feel, as he cannot believe how critical Evie is of Bendis's talksturbation-filled Avengers #1. Ex Machina shocks by seeminly wrapping up the major plotline an issue early, (and we don't spoil it) Aaron loves the hungry hungry hijinx of Galacta, and Evie says long live the Legion relaunch (what is this, volume 17? 18?) Also a little bit of Lost-talk, because of course.

ALSO - we are collecting ideas for what to do in our upcoming 100th episode. So give us them.

My panel of the week is basically the entirety of Atomic Robo Vol 4 #3, but especially this page:

Every issue of this series is laugh out loud funny and this issue is no exception. You guys really need to be reading it, and if you are you need to start talking about it, because it's amazing.

I am SO worried about the end of Ex Machina, between how #49 turned out and my...less than complimentary feelings about Y #60.

Good show, which I quite enjoyed, but I've been curious about something for quite some time: Why does "Crap of the Week" have the most cheerful of the themes? I'm certainly not complaining, mind you, just curious and figured I'd ask.

My discussion question was used in the April Fool's episode with Chris & Euge. So does that earn me a Pokemon or a car battery thrown at my chest by Batman?

You know what's AWESOME about this week's podcast? Yawning. No, seriously. This is why I listen. You two make my day. Keep up the good work.

Bill D. - You definitely earn a pokemon, which is now up in an updated version of this here post.

John - I picked it up the week after you guys all sat in for Evie, and it was awesome, but I'm just not in the habit of looking for it so I missed it.

Melissa - so am I, but I have to believe BKV learned from the reaction to Y.

Ominousduck - it's also the silliest music, which is why we picked it for that. If I were to go with music that I believe is genuinely "crappy" it would make Evie mad because it would be 80's Euro synth pop, which she loves. (And if she knew how to produce audio, she would do the same with some of my Phish or Grateful Dead bootlegs.)

And Quinton Peeples - yes, we did this one waaaaaaay past our bedtimes.

Evie said...

This is the problem with our listenership, I can't tell if they're adorably loyal or sarcastic sons of bitches. But either one is a plus, Quinton.

Awesome bonus at the end.

Hey, I finally got around to picking up Thor and the Warriors Four #2, and I have to ask, HOW was this not cover of the week for its week??? It has Katie Power chasing Beta Ray Bill, and she's carrying a saddle and shouting "PONY!"
Seriously guys, what happened?

Doesn't Mr Terrific have giant eightballs? The T-spheres?

And how can Aaron not like Liberty Belle/Jesse Quick and Hourman, they're the superhero verison of you two!

David said...

Hey! I asked you guys about horses a couple times so I guess you could name a Ponyta or a Horsea after me... NEIGGHHHH

I think the fact that she had to wear heels for Playboy Radio is only a little bit odder than the fact that there even IS a Playboy Channel on the radio

Evie said...

Mart: They are only the superhero version of us in that they are married and the chick is blonde. Otherwise they pretty much have no personality. Where as we have way too much.

Oh, and the last episode actually made me find and listen to a Youtube of "Don't be cruel". The line is definitely either "digging dollars out of crock" or "digging dollars out of cock" (which doesn't make any more sense, but is more hilarious). No I don't have any idea what that's supposed to mean. My panel of the week would be the personal ad picture from Girl Comics of Wolverine with his foot up on the stump and the squirrel carrying a valentine of some kind. I think someone needs to get Hugh Jackman to pose for a version of that ASAP.

I think you guys should both wear giraffe shoes while taping ep 100... we wouldn't be able to see them, but we'd KNOW.

Also I agree the Lost finale was lousy as a sci-fi finale, but only because Lost turned out not to be sci-fi, and was instead about faith and god and stuff. Which was fine with me, since what kept me watching for six years was never knowing what the hell was coming next, and the finale certainly lived up to that precedent!

Evie, I think you:re a bit unfair to Avengers 1 with the coffee mugs. really, it was only for a couple of pages. And Wolverine has long had a mentorish relationship to many, and had a friendship with Jessica Drew/Spider Woman for just as long, too. Not only that, but Avengers are often just as noteworthy for their Jarvis-served coffee moments as they are for their Kang beatdowns. Like Aaron said, this is the first time the Avengers have felt Avenger-y in a while.

Totally YES to Evie:s comments about Galacta, though.

My dream team of characters I hate would be composed of all the Warren Ellis ripoff female characters that have cropped up in the Marvel Universe over the past few years: Maria Hill, Victoria Hand, and Sally Floyd. They could call the book "Desperately Seeking Jenny Sparks" or something.

LOTR_Dan said...

My Discussion question was about what team you would want to make a Pokemon Comic.

My name is Daniel, but I asked you to name the Pokemon Lydia for my girlfriend, who is a super Pokefan.

LOTR_Dan said...

Oh, and I would like to mention that Ultimate Spiderman is JUST as slow paced and boring as Avengers #1. It works pretty well for trades, but picking it up in floppies is just plain dull.

How did you know I was listening?

Evie said...

Because we're always listening to you, Clownschnitzel.

Mr. Terrific is the one black character I could give 2 shits about.

Patricio said...

Totally agree re: Tony Harris' faces. Looking at the upcoming Generation Lost covers I kept thinking "I guess after Ex-Machina ends Mayor Hundred becomes Maxwell Lord." Maybe that will be the surprising twist in issue #50?

Hey heathens, it's pronounced "MAY-gog".

Great episode. My enjoyment is greatly increased by the fact that I'm a New Edition/Bobby Brown expert. Hopefully you guys can learn some Bell Biv Devoe or Johnny Gill lyrics by the next episode (two other NE spinoffs).

Evie said...

Dude. You dare to suggest that we are ignorant in the ways of New Jack NE spinoffs. This does not RUB ME THE RIGHT WAY.

Something Besides Anonymous said...

"My My My". I apologize. My comments were "Poison". Please forgive my lack of "Sensitivity".
(Okay, I'll stop now.)

Oh, and thanks to you guys, I've suffered from headaches trying to figure out what "diggin' dollars by the crock" means...

Speaking of ridicule of image era teams and your relationship with Grant Morrison - have you ever read the Doom Force one-shot eschewing Liefeld's X-force?

Wrye said...

Having seen the all musical 100th episode of "I'm a Marvel, I'm a DC", I'm not sure what I could suggest for ABCP's 100th to top that. Revisiting Episode 1 in some way might be fun, though. And of course, there's always the "big Comic Booky twist" option.

Eric Lyden said...

This is probably not the most creative 100th episode idea, but maybe you could go back through all the episoes and give us your choices for the Hero of the first 100 episodes, Cover of the first 100 episodes, etc...

Also, now when I read any Morrison Batman book I feel like I have Chris Sims on one shoulder telling me how great it is and Aaron & Evie on the other telling me how ungreat it is.

I haven't read EX MACHINA in a while, but I sure hope Harris' current artwork is better than his JL: GENERATION LOST covers would indicate.

And I did enjoy AVENGERS #1, but I must have been in a good mood when i read it because I do find I agree with all the criticism of it. Yet I still am looking forward to issue 2.

- I have huge problems with Bendis on Avengers. His style works on New Avengers. (and probably still will) He just can't hack it on a book like Avengers, big Story/plot/ideas just ain't his strength. It wasn't that the characters were "out-of-character" so much as they were just annoying. The flagship Avengers book should not be fucking Marvel Coffee Talk.
- Joe the Barbarian really was SO good.

Another great episode(I've subscribed, I really enjoy the show).

As for the 100th, maybe you could recap the best and worst issues you've read since starting the podcast.
