Episode #70 is up, VERITABLE CORNUCOPIA OF VISUALS COMING SOON

(PARDON OUR APPEARANCE WHILE WE MESS AROUND WITH A POTENTIAL NEW LOGO)

We're getting ready to truck it out of Rochester, but our special on-location-ish episode of the podcast is up here or in the right sidebar. Be advised that we have our normal visual aids PLUS pictures and other bonus material galore, that I just don't have quite enough time to post before check-out, so those will be up tonight. So please come back! Anyway:

This very special episode of Awesomed By Comics is brought to you by Fun Facts About Rochester, NY, where we have recorded the show on location at (a hotel a few miles away from) the Strong National Museum of Play. In addition to an exhibit on American Comic Book Heroes and the National Toy Hall of Fame, the museum houses a fully stocked '80s video arcade, a supermarket just for kids, a fantastic interactive Sesame Street exhibition, and enough wandering toddlers to feed a medium-sized nation. Big winners in the comics department this week include Detective Comics, Wonder Woman, Beasts of Burden, Ares, Dominic Fortune, Angela Robinson's The Web, and New Avengers, and hilarious, exasperated furor is reserved for the likes of Blackest Night and JLA.

Hey guys. I have to agree with Evie on my cover of the week it definitely goes Invincible Iron Man #20. I chose this because it was very clean looking and a nice contrast to everything else on the shelves. My crap of this week was the second panel of the last page of Uncanny X-men #517 because well we all feel the same way about TH' Hell. My book was the Chew trade. Had heard good things about the series, I am glad I picked it up. It is an original concept that works well and has fantastic art. I enjoyed this weeks show as always. Keep up the good work.

For those who don't like the new logo, can you elaborate on what you don't like about it? I'm not being the least bit testy, seriously--I like the concept of it, but I'm sure Aaron would tweak it to not make people cringe if there's something specific you don't like (colors, symbols in the letters, font?). That old banner was just pretty trashy.

And otherwise thanks for the lovely if racy feedback!

No Molly

Ah, so you don't hate the design concept, you'd just vote for a Molly reinstatement?

I like the concept, but the letters are a little too indistinct/blocky. I think they need to stand out more clearly as the letters they are.

RE: BLACKEST NIGHT- Mind you I'm not one of the people saying it's the greatest super hero comic ever, but I find it has kind of a dumb, action movie vibe for me. It's true that not a lot happens in each individual issue, but but what does happen usually involved super heroes battling the reanimated corpses of their deceased friends and i find that pretty fucking entertaining, if not Earth shattering.

Crap of the Week- Forgetting to pick up ARES #2. Runner up is the latest JSA, but at this point it's my own fault for continuing to buy the stupid book.

Book of the Week- DETECTIVE COMICS. Also gets Panel of the Week for every single panel JH Williams drew.

Hero of the Week- Hercules just for being consistently awesome.

First/ Last book of the week- TICK: THE NEW SERIES.

So far, I've enjoyed Blackest Night in that at least the tone of the book isn't an "Earth shattering cataclysm that will change the the core of the DCU forever" like some of the past events. To me, it's more of an Underworld Unleashed or Final Night, rather than a Infinite Crisis or Civil War.

As for Hal's characterization, it is grating. But this is a character that was an insurance salesman, a toymaker, a genocidal maniac, and the lamest version of the Spectre ever. I think Johns has to give us a Hal five every once in a while to remind the longtime followers that he's back to being the devil may cry test pilot, and not any of the things people might wish to forget but remember to make fun of. You can't build a franchise around a toymaker. And the Barry Allen line wasn't so bad, but maybe that was my reading of it.

As for what I've liked about Blackest Night, it's mainly been the characterization, which is something Johns has made his reputation on. Sinestro, Carol, Atrocious, Larfleeze, and Saint Walker have all been pretty great, and their role has kept me with at least baited interest in the whole affair. Beyond that, a zombie invasion in the DCU is usually just a Thursday.

I hate the new logo because when I was in college it caused the device I constructed to contact the netherworld to explode horribly scarring my face.

Also the CMY color scheme burns my retnas, the inset designs are so bland they're nearly invisible, they're hidden even more by the button effect, the slight overlap in the letters is offputting given the perspective given to them, and it's only legible if you already know the site. I'd throw the whole thing out and start over but if you're insistent on the theme then flip the positions of the name and logo in the graphic, change the colors, and lose the embossing effect.

Blackest Night is very much readable if you just do not read Hal Jordon Bubbles. I ready all the other conversations and bubbles sense I can not stand Hal I skim over him just enough to understand the point. Other then that its an ok event, It does seem to be picking up speed finally with this issue. I just miss old events that were not attempting to be smarter then what they are. Smart does not equal long and drawn out, case in point "I Kill Giants" short and to the point and a very smart enjoyable read. By the way thanks for suggesting that as a read !!
