ABCP Episode #72 and visual aids

Tuesday is the new Monday.

This episode of Awesomed By Comics is brought to you by Aaron's mea culpa regarding microphone technique, which is ironic since his mic distorts for a minute at the very beginning, and he didn't notice. Secret Six and S.W.O.R.D. win big, partially because they're two of the four books Evie read, but mostly because they win everything when they come out anyway. Aaron gushes over Paul Tobin's Marvel All-Ages output, and claims to have coined the phrase "Tobinverse," although he may or may not have. (NOTE: A google search turns up only one Paul Tobin-related result for "tobinverse" - ironically posted just last week, by friend-of-the-show Douglas Wolk.) Also, we decide the X-Men anthology books are better than anything else X-related.

I also think the X anthology books are great. I loved the Iceman story as well. Great show once again you 2.

As a recent (2 year) comic addict, I've yet to be impressed by anything resembling a crossover event :/

Annihilation.

Annihilation, Annihilation, Annihilation.

Every comics writer who even thinks about launching a crossover of any kind should be forced to read Annihilation.

Evie was right in the first place about Gail Simone creating Black Alice, as she originally appeared in Birds of Prey during Gail's excellent run on that book. It's collected in the Brids of Prey: The Battle Within trade.

Hey, Allred totally drew the Paul Bunyan statue from my hometown, Bangor, Maine! But that one doesn't have an accompanying Babe the Blue Ox, so I'm guessing he played "pick & choose" for the sake of a better image, and that Babe comes from a Bunyan statue in one of the many other places in the country that claims him as their own.

Where does that part of the story take place, anyway? It'd be nice if it actually was supposed to be Maine. Maine gets so few shout-outs in comics.

Hooray, I made it onto the podcast! The second Sentry miniseries was also by Jenkins, but it was after he'd been brought back in New Avengers and a pretty bad retcon of the Void had been done in that book. The miniseries retconned that retcon (though I don't remember how exactly. . . I'm not . . . ALLOWED to remember, also, its been years since I read it). Ultimately it was pretty unfocussed and read more like some one-shots introducing ideas about the Sentry and his supporting cast that could have been hooks for him to be interesting as an ongoing character. I stopped reading the Avengers line around Civil War, so I don't know if that has been followed up on, but my impression is that it hasn't been. Another thing I found irritating was that it came out either right before or right after the Eternals miniseries Romita Jr. drew, which revolved around Ikaris, a classically handsome, larger than life hero with a blond mullet and (in that story) problems with repressed memories of a different life. At the time the similarity in appearance really jumped off the page at me.

Ha! There were 2 places where Aaron's voice faded out! Once early in the beginning and later, when he was talking to the cat! :)

Also, I thought I've heard the term, Tobinverse before, but I'm not sure...

Oof, I can't get behind that Secret Six cover. That one leg is all sorts of messed up. How is it attached?!

Didn't THE BOYS ##7 come out last week?

And now I'm curious to hear the story Aaron was trying to tell in the tail end of the show before he was so rudely interupted by Evie.

Book of the Week- PUNISHER MAX #2. I'll also give it cover of the week and name Kingpin Villian of the Week while I'm at it.

First/ last Book of the Week is DAYTRIPPER #1. I had no idea what to expect from this book, but I quite enjoyed it. While I like UNWRITTEN and SWEET TOOTH it's nice to read a Vertigo book with no fantasy elements.

I like how Nightcrawler and Wolverine follow proper urinal decor by keeping one urinal in between them while they talk.

Dug up my copies of the Sentry vol. 2, and it's better than I remember. It's definitely the current version of the Sentry though, and the ending is flat out terrible.
