ABC Podcast, EPISODE #100 AND WOOOOOOOO

Dudes! We did it! We made it to our centennial episode, which is a totally arbitrary thing to celebrate but AWWW YEAAAHHH. We start off this third season of Awesomed By Comics (50 shows per season, why not?) with a bunch of brand new categories, questions, cat stuff, and a very special musical remembrance of episodes of yore. Likely winners include various Wonder Woman-related things, Unknown Soldier, Thor and Batman Beyond; unlikely winners include Green Lantern and Action Comics. We also debut a new version of the theme song, and wish you a happy snappy Fourth O' July!

Download/subscribe to the show here or in the right sidebar, and leave an iTunes review! Tell us what you think in the comments, and suggest your own winners for our categories!

And now, thanks to new listener and contest winner Marina, you all get the following recipe courtesy of the "have what Awesomed by Comics is having for dinner, for dinner" contest.

You will need:

1 copy of the album And by The Ampersands (my band)
1 stick of butter
1 egg
brown sugar
molasses (preferably ''robust")
flour
baking soda
ground ginger
cinnamon
allspice
nutmeg
cloves
salt

ABCPGingerbread

1) Put on the album And by The Ampersands (my band) which is available at fine online music retailers everywhere.

2) Figure out how to make that stupid little degree symbol thingy

3) Preheat oven to 350°

4) In a small bowl mix the following:
------- 1 3/4 cups flour
------- 1 tsp Baking Soda
------- 1 1/2 tbsp Ground Ginger
------- 2 tsp Cinnamon
------- 2 tsp Nutmeg
------- 1 1/2 tsp Ground Cloves
------- 1 tsp Allspice
------- 1/4 tsp salt

5) In a large bowl, beat one stick of butter until softish, as though that ever works beyond just getting the butter stuck in the beaters, but whatever, that's what I always do and it works fine.

6) Add one large egg and 3/4 cup (tightly packed) brown sugar and beat until the butter isn't stuck in the beaters anymore, and the whole thing's relatively smooth.

7) Add 1 cup Robust Molasses and beat until well-blended. Regular molasses works okay too, I just really like the Robust kind.

8) Gradually beat in the flour/spice mixture until everything's in there and it's all nice and smooth.

9) Add 1/2 cup boiling water and beat the brains out of the stuff. I have no idea what purpose the water serves or why it has to be boiling, but every gingerbread recipe I've ever seen has told me to do this, so screw it, I'm putting it in my recipe too.

10) Grab an 8 or 9 inch pan (square, round, trapezoidenal, whatever) and grease it or line it with wax paper, or both.

11) Pour the stuff into the pan and bake for 40-45 minutes. Of course, oven temperature and climate and sea level and bla bla bla, just poke something into the middle after 40 minutes.

12) Top with vanilla ice cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg and enjoy while reading your favorite funnybooks!!!

I'm so full of love for you two right now! A shout out AND a gingerbread recipe? You're enabling two of my favorite habits, you enablers! (cooking and comics, not shout-outs)
Congratulations on your 100th episode!

Black Widow also got a new costume in 1970 or the late 60s which has stuck ever since, so did the Falcon. The connecting thread between these costume changes (plus Daredevil) is reasonably obvious, the costumes that preceded them were truly atrocious, like really, really heinous. There are also plenty of characters who have never quite established a single costume or look: most of the X-Men, the Wasp and Hank Pym, Catwoman, the Batgirls, et cetera.

When you think about it, most of the heroes whose costumes are ultimately unchangable are that way for a reason: they got the right costume. Maybe an objectively ludicrous one (Doctor Doom, Wonder Woman) but the right one for that character.

I have to say that all day after hearing the closing song I've been humming it and it's been stuck in my head. That is one of the greatest pieces of music that I have ever listened too and I loved it so much that I didn't just "love" it I "LOVED" it in capital letters that should actually be about 10 times bigger than they are appearing here. Seriously, that was one of the greatest things I've ever heard.

Keep up the great work. I look forward to the next episode but I know I will never hear a closing song as enjoyable as the one for the 100th episode.

A few years back I worked for a video game publisher that has been around for ages - theoretically they were a big part of video game history, but they never got the respect that other, equally historic developer/publishers had. They went through a big rebranding phase, asking themselves (overandoverandover) 'why don't we have a repuation for quality?' - the company did a million things to try to change this reputation, but never once faced the fact that they didn't give a shit about whether their games were quality or not.

That was long.

Here's the metaphor. DC thinks Wonder Woman is broken, and they need to change something - the costume, the origin, whatever. The way to unbroken Wonder Woman is just to make the comic good, make it matter, make it part of something good. Making Wonder Woman look like Rogue circa 1991 doesn't make fans or non-fans associate Wonder Woman with good comics - good comics do that.

Which is essentially my point about DC over and over again - how comes Wonder Woman was awesome in the JLA cartoon and so lame in the comics? You can replace Wonder Woman with practically every other DC character here.

(At work, please forgive stream of consciousness and lack of grammars)

Incidentilly, Panini publishes all the Marvel titles available on Mewstands throughout Europe, including a few unique titles for specific countries, which is where I guess X-Classroom or whatever came from. There's (or there was) a UK based Marvel Superheroes anthology in which Captain Britain was disproportionately important, for example.

"It's DC Comics so she was probably raped" made me laugh and feel sad at the same time. It's like the worst t-shirt slogan ever...

re: music in comics, back in the '90s I really liked the "suggested soundtrack" in the front of Scud, telling you which song to listen to while reading each scene.

Big Congrats & Thank You @ ABC!!! :)

Don't wanna spoil the party, by saying listening to Aaron whine about certain things and continually interrupt Evie is kinda getting tired, but this is a good milestone for you both, and hopefully you will continue to entertain us all with your comic book podcast in the future.

Great ep guys. Too bad you didn't get the Iron Man Annual, you could have given Mandarin the award of Best Dress villain in a single comic.
Really Dr. Doom, still wearing last years Tunic and Cloak, get with the times.

Oh and thanks for reading my question.

I'm only 20 minutes in, but am terrified I'll forget to thank you for the gingerbread recipe. I plan to build a house by the local school ...

Happy 100, Aaron and Evie!

So, hey, concerning Toots... have you always found him to be annoying, or did you like any of his earlier releases? Or is it maybe you feel he's forever mired in a case of arrested development?

Evie said...

Bill: I was an early fan, then got sick of his material, but thought possibly this was possibly the album he was born to record. However my Faith was shattered.

Thanks for a great show, happy anniversary!

I love the new version of the theme, it's so big and manly!

Panini also do originated material for Britain, mainly Spidey stuff to suit their all-ages comics.

I agree, DC press rep Alex Segura deserves a big pat on the back for last week's Wonder Woman publicity. It's funny, we ran the story in the paper I work for, and as always with these things, had to pretend we believed the change was permanent. Hey, it's bright and breezy filler fodder.

That Unknown Soldier book detailing the story of an AK-47 sounds good, didn't Joe Kubert and/or Robert Kanigher used to do that sort of thing in Silver Age DC war comics?

Why is no one but me bothered by Lex's lack of eyebrows in Action Comics ... fantastic book, nevertheless.

Loki came out early April, if anyone needs more info ...

Loved the finale song, though I had to stop after about 34. You have a fine end-falsetto, Aaron.

And in these comments ... 'Disproportionately important', my fellow Mart? Those Marvel Superheroes issues were fantastic, as they featured the first originated material for a few years, as Cap was brought back and his revitalisation begun. Just having something produced especially for us UK readers made us feel special. Well, me at least!

Congratulations on hitting the century mark! Thanks for a great episode, starting with:
*The more "muscular" theme music: Me likey, even though (or because?) it still sounds a lot like the Kids in the Hall's theme music by Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet.
*I enjoyed the cat cameo. More Stan, please!
*On Wonder Woman: I haven't read the issue yet, but it sounds like the "big changes" will not be permanent. This mirrors a recent trend in superhero media splashes:
Spidey unmasked! Oops, fixed... by Satan.
Captain America dead! ...aaand he's back.
This too shall pass; my guess is Diana will return to her original backstory (and the swimsuit) within two years.
*Griffin Silver was the character whose lyrics were often the "mood music" for SiP. That's the first music/comics crossover series I thought of.
*Aaron: "I don't like Lex Luthor at all." File under "d" for "duh." But despicable characters can be great fun, esp. when a powerhouse like Paul Cornell gets a crack at one of 'em.

Again, congrats and thanks for being there every week! ABC is one of my favorite hours every week. Looking forward to Season Three.

Mazel Tov on 100 episodes! Excellent call on Unknown Solider 21. I've watched plenty of History and Military Channel shows on the AK-47, but Dysart/Veitch took the history and really spun it into a great story.

I'm in agreement on Heralds. I had high hopes for this series and while I still think Kathryn Immonen is one of the best writers in the business I agree with Aaron that while not _everything_ needs to be explained; there are things that _must_ be explained for a great story. She still delivered a great story.

That said, the art. Three very talented artists that were shoehorned onto a book that they a) had no business all being on because their styles were so conflicting and didn't serve a purpose being together (whereas The Return of Bruce Wayne is being written specifically to have different artists on different arcs) and b) they were all working way too fast and the book looked rushed. They should have backed out of the weekly thing and taken their time to get it right.

Ethan Hoddes said...

I feel like the art and writing fit together a little too well at times in Heralds, and it just became totally impenetrable. One question: issue #2, page 5, last panel (at the bottom, pagewide). does anyone have any idea what the hell I'm looking at and what it has to do with anything?

Great show and congratulations on making it to 100 episodes and awesoming your listeners every episode. Just an idea for a discussion topic you guys could do. While we hear what comics you like dislike etc. I was wondering what comic book podcasts you listen to or enjoy on a regular basis. It's pretty obvious that you listen to both Ifanboy and war rocket but what others do you recommend.

Jim B- I'm glad you pointed out how similar the ABCP theme sounds to the Kids in the Hall theme. I'm also glad Aaron mentioned it was based on a song from a video game because it's kinda been bugging me for a while, but I hated to think Aaron was ripping off a TV theme song.

I also want credit for listening to the entire bloody song at the end.
